Practice Notes

  • Students new to Ashtanga yoga are asked to observe a class before starting practice.
  • Students should bring their own sticky yoga mat to class. A thin cotton rug can also be used for heavy sweating.
  • Props are not used.
  • Loose, natural-fiber clothing is recommended.
  • It is advisable to practice at about the same time every day, and no more than once per day.
  • Students are asked not to eat anything and to drink only water for two to three hours before starting practice, and not to drink water during practice.
  • Students are asked to bathe before class, wear freshly laundered clothing, maintain a clean yoga mat and rug, and refrain from using any scented body products.
  • It is traditional for women not to practice during the first two or three days of menstruation.
  • The school is closed on new and full moon days.
  • Out of respect for the teacher's and the school's schedule, and in the interest of supporting integrity within the practitioner and upholding it among fellow students, all students should arrive to class early enough to complete their entire practice within the specified class time (including shavasana, or relaxation). For led classes and workshops, it is advised to arrive at least ten minutes early.
